Carry on Jatta 2: Only one word “Hilarious”

2012 can be called golden year of Punjabi movies. That year gave us Jatt and Juliet and Carry on Jatta. These movies developed cult following of their own and rejuvenated Punjabi movies. They were also breakthrough movies for Diljit  Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal. They are now superstars of Punjabi movies. Jatt and Juliet’s  sequel came in 2013 but surprisingly Carry on Jatta’s sequel came 6 years later. Today , I will review  Carry on Jatta 2. I might be right or wrong but I am not an expert. I am just a guy with internet connection.

Like Jatt and Juliet 2, Carry on Jatta 2 is not connected to last movie. It is a completely separate movie. It is not actually intellectual movie nor does it pretend to be . Its main motive is making people laugh and  it succeeds in that.  It doesn’t try to be a social commentary. It has a very simple story but it is the comedic moments that make this movie worth watching.  Movie knows that it is a comedy movie. It doesn’t let you forget that. It has rib tickling scenes that make you laugh out loud.

It is more slapstick comedy than the last one.  Its jokes are more physical in nature.  It does contain jokes from the last movie but you don’t have to watch it to understand them. It doesn’t refer Carry on Jatta 1 too much. Infact, there is only one reference to it in the last movie.  And it doesn’t contain pop culture reference . Hence, anyone can enjoy them.  I would  criticize its editing. Songs came out of nowhere and contributed nothing to the movie.  Songs shouldn’t be in a movie just for the sake of having songs. They should  feel part of the movie

This movie rides on the performance of  Jaswinder Bhalla, Gurpreet Ghuggi, BN Sharma, Binnu Dhillon, Karamjit Anmol and Gippy Grewal. Gippy is a better performer than he was during the last movie. He was really good in this movie. But it is the performance of other supporting characters( I don’t believe that they are) that makes this movie worth watching.  There is no need to say that Jaswinder Bhalla, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Binnu Dhillon , BN Sharma and Karamjit Anmol are the best actors in Punjab especially in comedic roles.  Amongst female actors, I was a little upset that Upasana Singh didn’t get much to do. Sonam Bajwa is really beautiful.  She is really easy on the eyes.  Do I love her? Yes. But Did I miss Mahie Gill? Yes I did. I wish she was here in the movie.

In the end, I would like to say that watch this movie if you want to laugh. This movie is not for learning anything. It is not a healthy salad but a tasty Parantha. There will be people who will love it and some people who will hate it. I am part of the former.  I might be right or I might be wrong but I am no expert. I am just a guy with Internet connection.

Subedar Joginder Singh: Trailer review

Trailer of upcoming Punjabi war movie Subedar Joginder Singh is out. Here is my review of it. I might be right or wrong but I am no expert.

Trailer looks fabulous. Its battle scenes looks pretty awesome for a Punjabi movie. It is a great thing that this and Sajjan Singh Rangroot are the most awaited Punjabi movies of the year. Punjab has a rich history of warfare , so it is surprising that Punjabi cinema haven’t brought a war movie till these 2. But it is understandable as war movies require a lot of money and efforts. Hopefully, we will see more Punjabi war movies in the future. I am a sucker for War movies.

Unlike Sajjan Singh Rangroot which focuses more on emotion, this movie focuses more on war.  From trailer it can be said that Sajjan Singh Rangroot is like Haqeeqat and Subedar Joginder Singh is like Border. I will be watching both of these movies.

Subedar Joginder Singh has an impressive star cast including Gippy Grewal, Harish Verma, Guggu Gill, Sardar Sohi, Nirmal Rishi, Aditi Sharma.  Trailer looks fantastic, just hope that movie is also awesome.  This and Sajjan Singh Rangroot can take Punjabi cinema to the next level

Khido Khundi: Trailer review

Trailer of upcoming Punjabi movie Khido Khundi is out. I will write my review of it. I might be right or wrong but I am no expert.

It is a good thing that Punjabi cinema is diversifying. It is well known that Punjabi movies focus a lot on comedy aspect. Laughter is a good medicine but too much of any medicine can cause severe side effects. From the trailer, it doesn’t look like a run of the mill comedy movie. Trailer promises a serious movie but it also looks like that it will be full of cliches. It might also suffer from the fact that its release date will be near Sajjan Singh Rangroot which will affect its performance. Personally, it looks like a good movie but nothing that haven’t been done before.

Sajjan Singh Rangroot: Trailer review

Trailer of Punjabi war movie Sajjan Singh Rangroot is out. It is freaking awesome. It stars Diljit Dosanjh and Yograj Singh in lead role and both look marvelous in it. This movie will be based on Indian soldiers in World War 1. It is about time that someone made a movie on this topic. We Indians don’t pay respect to the soldiers fought in the world wars.

Trailer looks more than just promising. It battle scenes are unbelievable for a Punjabi movie. Acting wise, Diljit look super awesome in this movie. This movie will prove vital for his career like Punjab 1984. Yograj SIngh is a legend and he looks absolutely badass in this trailer.

It is wonderful that this movie will be releasing on March 23.

I can say that this and Subedar Joginder Singh can take Punjabi cinema to the next level. Action movies is an area where Punjabi cinema severely lacks.

Mission Impossible : Fallout trailer review

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt and he looks good in it.  I personally like Mission Impossible movie. Yes, they have become generic over the years but there is no harm in being generic. Tom Cruise’s movies are not doing great of late not only bad ones The Mummy but also good ones like American Made. I hope that this movie ends that drought.  Also, this movie is responsible for the CGI removed mustache of Henry Cavill in Justice League. It has to be worth it

Coming to trailer, it looks like an enjoyable action movie. It follows all the check points of a Mission impossible movies like Tom Cruise riding a bike, Tom Cruise jumping of building, Tom Cruise running etc. I don’t think it will anything more than an enjoyable action movie

Punjabi cinema in 2017

On the last day of 2017, I have decided to give my views on punjabi cinema in the year 2017. My review can be wrong or write but I have already said that I am no expert.

According to me, 2017 was pretty mixed bag. It started with a bang but ended with bust.

First big movie of 2017 was Sarvann.  It was highly anticipated but failed to live upto the expectations. Amrinder Gill’s charisma and Priyanka Chopra’s debut production venture in Pollywood wasn’t enough to make this movie a success. It lacked one thing that make punjabi movies click (humor).

First big hit of 2017 was Manje Bistre starring Gippy Grewal and Sonam kapoor which was proven to be one of the biggest hits of Punjabi cinema. It was a success both in India and overseas. Real Punjabi wedding scenario was loved by the Punjabi audience. Along the same time, Jindua was released starring Jimmy Shergil, Sargun Mehta and Neeru Bajwa. Jimmy Shergill is one of the most beloved Punjabi actor. It is admirable that despite his success in Bollywood, he works in Punjabi movies from time to time. Jindua was also well loved by the audience and was a big hit.

One of the biggest surprise for me was Rabb da Radio.  It was not a huge box office success but developed a following on You tube. I was fooled by its poster as it showed its main actor Tasreem jassar. I thought that it will focus on the life of a man but it focused mainly on its heroine. Simi Chahal was the USP of the film. It is great to see a movie with Female protagnist. Punjabi cinema should focus more on female led movies. In 2016, Kulraj randhawa, Neeru Bajwa and Jaspinder Cheema showed that movies can succeed with female lead.

First Punjabi super hero movie was also released in 2017. Super Singh was more in the mold of Jatt and Juliet. It looked like Fateh Singh with superpowers. It is good to see a superhero movie in Punjab. Unlike Margaret Redlich of Don’t call it Bollywood, I respect superhero genre and Hollywood. Hence, I won’t say that it was any way near Wonder Woman, Logan, Thor: Ragnarok etc. It will be extremely stupid thing to say. But I will say that it was a good attempt. It was a movie that was promoted on the Kapil Sharma show and enjoyed main stream popularity. Its problem was that it relied too much on Diljit.

By the end of the first half of year, there was Vekh Barataan Challiyan. It was also a surprise hit. It starred Binnu Dhillon and Kavita Kaushik with Amrinder Gill in special appearence. It was a good movie. At first glance, it looked like a simple comedy movie but turned out to be quite emotional in the end. It was the last big hit on 2017.

Second half was pretty dull. There were hits like Sat Sri Akal England, Thug Life, Nikka Zaildar 2 but none of them were quite special.  Great Sardar was the worst movie of the year. It was sad that Toofan Singh was banned from getting released in India. It was successful overseas. Only movie of note was Sardar Mohammad which was also not upto the mark.

According to me, it was a mixed bag for Punjabi cinema in 2017. First half tasted success but not the second half.  Line up for the first half of 2018 looks good so far with movies like Sajjan Singh rangroot, Daana Paani, Subedar joginder  Singh, Carry on Jatta 2, Nankana releasing in that time frame. 2018 should turn out to be a good year for Punjabi cinema as the most awaited movies as pretty much unconventional.

Punjabi songs on Friendship

Punjabi movies have a very limited audience but opposite is true for Punjabi songs. Punjabi songs are popular throughout India. Punjabi songs are mostly targeted at youth audience. It is well known that during youth a guy has maximum number of good friends. Hence, there are lot of Punjabi songs on friendship. Yesterday, I met my old friends after 4 years. In that memory, I have decided to share some friendship songs in Punjabi. They may not be best but I am no expert

Here are some that I like

Yaar Anmulle by Sharry Maan

Yaar Anmulle is quite old. It came during my college times. It used to be played in hostel room. It was a great time. In this song, a guy looks at his old album and remembers the old times

Yaar Mod do by Guru Randhawa

Quite an emotional song. It is a great song with great video  and great lyrics. According to me, best Guru Randhawa song. Lyrics mean “Take my car, take my money but return my friends”. It contains a line.

Zindabaad Yaarian by Ammy Virk

It is also a good song. Lyrincs mean “Long live the friendship that keeps me alive”. I like this song a lot. Ammy Virk is a good singer cum actor.

Yaar Beli by Inderjeet Nikku

It is not best Inderjeet Nikku but I find the video to be funny

Yaar Jatt de by Jassi Gill and Babbal Rain

Not a big fan of Babbal rai but he and Jassi Gill were quite good in it. Storyline was good but this song should have included more Bhangra in it.

Taur Mittran Di by Amrinder Gill

Taur Mitran di also came during my college times. It was played during long trips. It has beautiful Ladakh scene. But video was a little off as it would have been better with group of friends instead of couples. There is no doubt that Amrinder Gill is the best Punjabi singer and actor

Devdas2.0  by Karan Benipal

Not that good but I liked the take on Devdas in it.  Lyrics says “Jatt didn’t become Devdas because of u. Friends stood by me where u left. I never drank in ur memory, joy of drinking with friends is unparalled”. I know some people will get offended by it (Some SRk fans) but u people have offended me more times than I could count.

Yaarian by Amrinder Gill

Not a friendship song but it has good story behind it. In my group, I was the only one who listened Punjabi songs regularly. One day, one of my friends listened to this song from my phone and everyone loved it. It was played a lot of times over the course of next few months. I was even forced to sing it in front of a lot of people. Hence, I decided to put it over here

Some people might like them, some might hate them but I am no expert

Why I love Game of Thrones

I love Game of Thrones more than any show I have seen. I love it more than even Friends. It might be an unpopular opinion  but I am no expert. I watched it for the first time in 2014 when season 4 was about to air. I heard a lot about it from my friends and I decided to give it a try. I downloaded 3 seasons of it and watched it. And I started loving this show.

Following are the reasons why I love this show

It doesn’t follow traditional narrative: It is no secret that Game of Thrones tries to stray away from traditional story telling. In the very first episode, we witness Robert Baratheon, an old, fat drunkard. We learn more about him and find out that Robert was a great warrior in his youth, his beloved was kidnapped by an evil prince. He killed that prince ,dethroned the tyrant King and later married a beautiful princess. This is the ending of a fairy tale but it is a beginning of Game of Thrones. Robert has become an old drunkard fool who is not even a shadow of his former self. His beautiful princess is an evil, greedy, selfish woman who has extra marital affairs with his twin brother.  There are several other scenes which completely took audience by surprise starting from the very first show
Following scene happened in the very first episode

There are several other instances. Most notably, the shocking moment in the Game of thrones history Death of Ned Stark. Apart from that death of Red viper and Red wedding also breaks the traditional narrating. It takes away plot armor

It has gripping plot lines: I concede that there have been several misfires like drone but overall plot lines have been great. Game of thrones has multiple plot lines. It doesn’t focus on single person. It focuses on multiple stories. A lot of stuff happens in the show. Some storylines are completely different from others but these keep the audience glued to the TV sets. It is hard for me to show my favorite story line.

It has epic characters and character development: Game of Thrones is filled with epic characters like Tyrion lanninster,  Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Lyanna Mormont, Sansa Stark, Cersei lanninster, Arya Stark, Jaime Lanninster, Brienne of Tarth. Ned Stark has been dead for 5 years but still feels like main character. It is not only about characters but also character development. We see Sansa Stark’s journey from being a spoiled princess to the ruthless and capable Lady who went through some of the harshest trials. Similarly, Arya Stark goes from a bubbly and tomboyish girl to a cold blooded assassin.
Following is the first scene between Arya Stark and Sansa Stark

Following is the scene between them in season 7

It has epic action scenes: Game of thrones posses some of the best battle scenes in TV history. Even before Battle of Blackwater bay, Battle of castle black , Massacre at Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards there was sword fight with Jaime Lanninster and Ned Stark

Following were the best battles in Game of Thrones

But there are others too

It has epic performances: No TV show can survive without great performances.  Game of Thrones is blessed with Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams and others. Peter Dinklage is undoubtedly the “most famous dwarf in the world”. His performance is so awesome that he is likely to get every good dwarf role. After Game of Thrones, he even got roles where him being dwarf wasn’t even necessary.  His height was never even the question in X Men: days of future past. Similarly, Jack Gleeson and Iwan Rheon made me really abhor their character. Maisie Williams has played the role of a serial assassin do good that even Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen will be proud of her performance.

there are several other scenes which I have no included

You can love the good guys, hate the bad guys, hate the good guys and love the bad guys: Game of Thrones is known for it grey characters. Good guys use some really questionable tactics, similarly bad guys have some admirable traits. It does have some really horrible characters like Ramsay and Jofferey. They are despicable characters with no saving grace. But there are some good guys that are hated by people. Its main character Daenerys targareyn burns people alive and a borderline tyrant but she claims to do all this for greater good. One of the villainous character Tywin Lanninster treats people with talent really well. Good guys like Daenerys, Lyanna Stark, Talisa Stark, Catelyn Stark are hated by a significant portion of people whereas bad guys like Tywin lanninster, Cersei Baratheon/Lanninster, Euron Greyjoy are admired by many. There are other pure grey characters like Margery Tyrell, Sandor Clegane, Jaime Lanninster
People are divided on Lyanna and Rhaegar. I hate their love story as it led to deaths of thousands. I am Team Robert guy

Most beautiful women on Television:  Game of Thrones is filled with extremely beautiful women. Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Natalie Dormer, Nathalie Emmanuel, Rose Leslie, Lena Headey make Game of Thrones beautiful
Image result for most beautiful girl in game of thrones

Image result for cersei lannister

Real Strong women character:  I am an advocate of strong women characters and Game of Thrones delivers them. We encounter a lot of strong women. Femininity is not considered a weakness in this universe. Cersei and Sansa are 2 strongest characters in the show but their femininity is properly maintained. But lack of femininity is also celebrated. Brienne of Tarth is not traditionally beautiful and she succeeds due to her fighting skills. Olenna Tyrell was a 70 year old grandmother but she was one of the strongest and most intelligent character on the show. We see trial and tribulations of these characters and how they evolve through them. Most of them are independent of men i.e their character development doesn’t depend on any male character. These are women that real women should take inspiration from. I will be naming my daughter Arya after Arya Stark. All this is achieved without demonizing men.

These are my reasons for liking Game of Thrones. If people can praise some shitty shows, I can definitely praise it. It is real sad that only 6 more episodes are left and they will air in 2019. I shall wait
